How to Set Up Your Google My Business Account

Here’s my step by step instructions on how to create a Google My Business listing for your business!

Before you begin, make sure you either have a valid Google Account (Gmail) or create one. To follow along, first go here: https://www.google.com/business/

Creating a Brand New Account

If you currently do not have a Google My Business page, click “START NOW”

Alternatively, in the top right, click sign in if you already have a Google My Business Account.

Now the fun starts! To begin, fill in your business information. (Make sure all the information is accurate!).

For category you must select from one of Google’s pre-approved categories. Try just typing a letter or two and options will appear to choose from.

Check the box that says “I am authorized to…” and click continue.

Now for this step, make sure your address is correct. If everything looks good, click “Mail”. Google will mail you a postcard with a verification code for proof that you are where you claim you are.

If you don’t want to do this step, you can verify later, but I would highly recommend you do this now. Without the verification, the rest of these steps don’t matter since your business will not appear on Google My Business.

Google offers a basic free website. I would skip this for now, you can always come back to it later. I would only recommend on doing this option after all the other steps are complete and only if you do not have your own website currently.

This one is purely optional. Basically if you click yes, Google will send you occasional emails (read: ads) with tips about your Google My Business page as well as incentives to use their Google Adwords services. I go with No, but that’s up to you. You can always click yes then unsubscribe later.

Adding Additional Details

It’s up and running! You will have to wait a week or so until you get the verification code in the mail for it to be found online, but let’s get it fully ready while we wait.

On the left hand side of the page, one will find the side bar. This is where you can find all the different sections talked about below as well as other areas for future use. Always feel free to click home if you get lost!

Enter as much details as possible. You can always change this later, but try and be accurate! Ignore the advanced information unless you sell products online AND know what you’re doing.

Finally, add some pictures! Try making sure they are high quality, it’s your online storefront! Try to add a photo for as many of Google’s categories as possible, and tag them correctly!

Well, that’s it! Now keep an eye on the mail carrier for that verification code! Once you get it, sign back in and enter it

Once you have it up and running, make sure you answer any questions, get your happy customers to leave you positive reviews, and keep it up to date with posts – from your blog, possible specials, you name it! And you can track customer data with Google insights.
